Carlos Izcaray Conductor Classical Music Alabama Symphony Orchestra Orquesta Sinfonica Philharmonic Venezuelan

Michael Huebner, a Birmingham music critic writes:

“It was a first glance at Izcaray's ability to mold orchestral color and create drama. The orchestra responded to his subtle tempo shifts and crisp baton technique with an animated performance, supplemented by focused string playing and a host of fine woodwind solos.

Conducting without a score, Izcaray let loose in Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique." This no-holds-barred reading brought out the best of ASO in romantic-era mode. Fleet violins, powerful brass, a revved-up percussion section were sparked by Izcaray's dynamism. Phrases were nicely shaped, silences and tempo changes carefully timed. Even more noticeable was his physicality, which was transmuted to music through unmistakable cues and circular baton motions, at times taking flight from the podium. It was easy to see where Izcaray was coming from musically.”
